The 2023 #LightTheWorld Christmas Initiative

The theme of the 2023 Light the World Christmas initiative echoes the profound words spoken by the Savior, “Let Your Light Shine.” Elder David Buckner, an Area Seventy, expressed the aspiration that this initiative would bring greater light, hope, promise, and joy to a world in desperate need.

The Giving Machines, now in their seventh year, present a unique avenue for individuals to serve and care for others. Rather than indulging in personal purchases, patrons make donations for those in need. Across all locations, a staggering 1,200 different items, meticulously selected by reputable local, national, and international nonprofit organizations, are available for contribution.

The array of items spans meals, groceries, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education, bedding, hygiene kits, job and career training, and even livestock such as chickens, goats, pigs, ducks, sheep, and beehives. Patrons with a generous spirit can enter 777 to contribute to every available cause.

While most Giving Machines across America open on Giving Tuesday, November 28, the Times Square machines will relocate to their permanent Manhattan holiday location at The Church of Our Saviour on 59 Park Ave. (at 38th Street). Operating from Giving Tuesday through January 1, 2024, these machines symbolize an extended season of giving.

In addition to the physical presence of Giving Machines, 15 digital displays in Times Square feature Christmas messages from the Church of Jesus Christ. These messages celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and express gratitude for the collaboration with local interfaith leaders and charities.

Representatives from nine participating national and global nonprofits attended the unveiling, including UNICEF, American Red Cross, Care, and Church World Service. Michael J. Nyenhuis, president and CEO of UNICEF USA, commended the effort as a unifying force during a time of division.

Collaboration between the Church of Jesus Christ and organizations like UNICEF USA, American Red Cross, and CARE International has spanned over a decade. The Light the World Giving Machines serve as a testament to the power of collective action in alleviating human suffering globally.

With over 250 local, national, and global nonprofits participating, this year’s initiative surpasses all previous years combined. Each organization brings a unique focus, from immigration legal fees and warm blankets to menstrual health products, contributing to sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster.

Monsignor Kevin Sullivan of Catholic Charities and the Archdiocese of New York emphasized the significance of bringing light to a world that often feels dark, expressing pride in partnering with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

As the Light the World Giving Machines continue to brighten the holiday season, they stand as a testament to the collective power of compassion, generosity, and the enduring spirit of giving.
