Did Father Lehi Have Daughters Who Married the Sons of Ishmael?
Although the beginning of Nephi’s record only mentions sons, Joseph Smith says the record of Lehi in the 116 missing manuscript pages refers to at least two of Ishmael’s sons marrying Lehi’s daughters. Nephi himself mentions his sisters at the end of his record. As no mention is made of further births to Lehi and Sariah after Jacob and Joseph, the assumption can be made that these sisters are the daughters who married Ishmael’s sons.
10 keys messages and principles in 1 Nephi 1-5
Faith in God’s Promise (1 Nephi 1:20) – Nephi mentions that his father, Lehi, saw and heard much, and because of these things, he did ‘quake and tremble exceedingly’. Yet, despite the trials, the Lord promises that he will be delivered, showing the power of having faith in God’s word.
Prophetic Calling (1 Nephi 1:6) – Lehi’s vision of God and calling as a prophet is also a testament to the reality of prophecy and the importance of heeding to the words of the prophets.
Obedience to God’s Commandments (1 Nephi 2:3) – Lehi’s immediate obedience to God’s command to leave Jerusalem shows the importance of obedience in our discipleship journey.
Prayer and Revelation (1 Nephi 2:16) – Nephi’s experience of seeking understanding through prayer and subsequently receiving revelation is a powerful example of how we can receive personal revelation in our lives.
Family Dynamics and Spirituality (1 Nephi 3:4–6) – The different reactions of Nephi and his brothers when asked to return to Jerusalem for the brass plates reveal a lot about their spiritual maturity and responses to challenges.
Courage and Trust in God (1 Nephi 4:1) – Nephi’s courage to go back to Jerusalem and his statement “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded” illustrates the power of trusting completely in God.
Scriptures are of Great Worth (1 Nephi 4:14–17) – The life-risking effort to retrieve the brass plates underscores the immense worth of scriptures.
God Prepares a Way (1 Nephi 3:7) – This is one of the most famous verses in the Book of Mormon, where Nephi affirms his belief that God will always prepare a way for us when he gives us a commandment.
Spirit Overcomes Physical Limitations (1 Nephi 4:31) – Nephi’s strength to continue his journey, despite being tied up and beaten, shows that spiritual strength can overcome physical limitations.
Divine Intervention and Guidance (1 Nephi 4:6) – When Nephi goes in unto Laban, the Spirit stops him and guides him, showing that God can intervene and guide us in difficult situations.
