The revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants were given in response to specific circumstances nearly 200 years ago, but the principles they teach are timeless.
Imagine Joseph Smith, not as the prophet of the Restoration, but as a teenager filled with a cheery temperament. What was Joseph like before he was a Latter-day Saint? We get to know a teenager as he becomes a married prophet as Dr. Michael MacKay explains what it means that Joseph “has a work . . . to do.”
If people knew you during your teenage years, would they say you were a lot different from how you turned out to be like as an adult? Well, the same is kind of true for Joseph Smith. After the first vision, Joseph Smith has a period of time where he knows he’s called of God but hasn’t received any further instructions. And in his eighteen thirty eight history, he recorded that between the ages of 14 and 17, he mingled with all kinds of society and he frequently fell into many foolish errors and displayed the weakness of youth and the foibles of human nature.
This is Joseph Smith, Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. He translated the Book of Mormon and he restored the gospel of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith was born in 1895 and he was named after his dad. There were 11 kids in his family and Joseph Smith was number five.
Why does God quote the Old Testament Prophet Malachi to begin the restoration?
This is the beginning of the stories of history that make up the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Before we jump into the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants we start with a small log home, a sacred grove, the young boy who asked a question, and an account of his marvelous experience.
