Come Follow Me LDS 2021 D&C 106-108 (Sept 20-26) (Doctrine and Covenants) – Priesthood Keys – powered by Happy Scribe
As Joseph Smith lay close to death from the deadly cholera that struck Zion’s Camp, he wondered what would happen to the Church if he were to die in the near future. He quickly realized he had to share his knowledge and the keys of the Kingdom before he died.
As soon as he got well, he earnestly began to teach, call and empower leaders with the Lord’s guidance. Now, through Zion’s Camp, the Lord had prepared many people to hold these keys and callings to support his Church. It was as if Joseph held the master keys and was now allowed to make copies to share with chosen disciples.
So the Lord had already called two high councils of twelve men in Kirtland and Missouri. But now it was time to call twelve Apostles to serve as traveling witnesses of Christ, to take the gospel to the world. Years earlier, Oliver Cory, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris, the three witnesses had been charged with finding these twelve Apostles, and Joseph now asked them to spiritually prepare for an upcoming conference where the calls would be made and told them to hop to it. On February 12, 1835, a large group gathered in Kirtland, where the three witnesses of the Book of Mormon called twelve modern day Apostles.
The congregation sustained the callings, and the Apostles were ordained, blessed, and then prepared to serve missions.
Out of the twelve Apostles, nine had marched with Zion’s camp. These Apostles included two sets of brothers Luke and Lyman Johnson, Elsa and John sons and the great missionaries Parley and Orson Brat. Then there’s Thomas Be March, the oldest at just 35 and 23 year old John Boynton, who actually invented the fire extinguisher. Also the very intelligent William E. Mclellan and David W.
Patten, who would be martyred during the upcoming Far West Missouri persecution. Additionally, we’re Brigham Young and Hebrews Kimball, who had been friends for years and joined the Church together, and finally the prophets younger brother William Smith and Orson Hyde, who would later dedicate Jerusalem for the returning of the Jews. Now these twelve soon began serving numerous missions two by two to the East Canada and to England, which greatly increased Church membership. Unfortunately, as major trials and temptations came, they didn’t all remain steadfast, and several fell away for a short time and others, sadly for the rest of their lives.
One who never fell away was Brigham Young and UN Enos to him.
The Lord was preparing him to become the next Prophet. Now Brigham had always been very poor. In fact, when he first arrived in Kurtland, he was wearing all borrowed clothing, but he was a very hard worker and spent years searching for eternal truths. Before joining the Church at age 31, he studied the restored Gospel for nearly two years to ensure that he’d indeed found the truth. Upon meeting Joseph for the first time, he recalled, I received the shore testimony by the Spirit of prophecy that Joseph was all that any man could believe him to be as a true Prophet.
Working closely together. For the next several years, Brigham saw Mary of Joseph’s human weaknesses but never lost his testimony that he was the Lord’s chosen Prophet because he knew the doctrines and teachings Joseph taught were from God. Brigham was loyal to Jesus Christ and to Joseph. One night, as Brigham was sleeping, he awoke to hear a man outside loudly declaring all sorts of negative things about Joseph’s. Brigham quickly got dressed, ran outside, grabbed the man, and warned, we have the Lord’s Prophet right here and we do not want the Devil’s Prophet yelling around the streets after Joseph Seth, Brigham calmly assured the confused Church members that the Prophet had indeed distributed all of the keys of the Kingdom and that the twelve collectively could lead the Church now and in the future.
Now. Section 107 is a combination of various revelations on priesthood and in it we learn about one of the greatest meetings ever held in the history of the world. It was recorded in the Book of Enoch, but unfortunately, that book’s been lost for centuries. Fortunately, Joseph saw the whole event in a vision. While he was giving a blessing to his father.
In this vision, Joseph saw Adam of Adam and Eve Fame gather his family in the Valley of Adam on diamond to bless them before he died. Okay, now at this point, Adam was 927 years old. Yeah, before the flood, people lived for hundreds of years. Well, he called all of his righteous prosterity together, and there were a lot of them, including sons, grandsons and great great, great great great grandsons. Like Seth Enos, Canon Jared Enik and Methuselah incredibly bowed down with age.
Adam individually gave patriarchal blessings to these great priesthood holders along with priesthood keys and then blessed his entire family. Then Jesus Christ appeared and gloriously spoke to the entire gathering. Further revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants devolves that another important gathering will again take place in Adam on diamond, just before the Savior’s second coming WW. Phelps expressed his excitement about gathering in Adam on Diamon in a song he wrote for the Kurtland Temple dedication, which is what we’ll discuss next time.
