The #LightTheWorld Giving Machines have surpassed 1 million dollars in donations!

The “Giving Machine” phenomena started last year by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help people provide an “instant act of service” during the #LightTheWorld initiative. In 2017, Salt Lake City was the sole location of the machines, making $551,679 total throughout the time it was active on Temple Square.

In a statement published first by LDS Living, Daniel Woodruff (Church spokesman) announced donations had exceeded $1 million dollars across the five machines located in Utah, Arizona, New York, London, and the Philippines.

“We are thrilled with the enthusiastic and generous response worldwide to the #LightTheWorld giving machines. In just a few weeks, these machines have generated 52,279 contributions, resulting in $1,332,128 in total donations to local and global charities.”

Woodruff said half of that amount had been spent of livestock and animals ($517,023 had been spent to purchase goats, cows, and chickens).

Other popular items included meals, sewing machines, water bottles, and polio vaccines.

“The giving machines will remain open in each location through the end of December 2018,” Woodruff said. “We are truly touched by the willingness of people to follow the example of our Savior Jesus Christ and make a difference this Christmas season.”
