The following was shared at the International Religious Freedom Summit 2024 (#IRFSummit24) in Washington, DC.

In a recent research project, intriguing findings have emerged regarding the state of prayer, meditation, and spiritual practices in America. The skylight.org study, conducted in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer on May 4, 2023, aimed to assess the prevalence and patterns of prayer and spirituality across the nation. The resultant “prayer wrap” offers a comprehensive snapshot of the spiritual landscape in America, shedding light on the diverse ways in which individuals connect with their higher power and engage in spiritual practices.

One of the most significant discoveries of the research is the overwhelming connection that individuals in America have with their higher power, with a staggering 85% of respondents expressing this connection. Furthermore, the study revealed that prayer is a prevalent practice, with 61% of Americans engaging in prayer. These findings underscore the continued relevance and significance of spirituality in the lives of individuals across the nation.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the research is the insight it provides into the changing trends in spiritual practices across different generations. The study revealed that younger generations, including Gen Z and millennials, are more inclined to incorporate objects and tools into their spiritual practices, with 22% utilizing such aids. This generational shift underscores the evolving nature of spirituality and the importance of adapting spiritual approaches to resonate with the changing demographic landscape.

The implications of these findings extend beyond individual spirituality to impact broader societal and corporate contexts. With a substantial portion of Americans engaging in prayer and spiritual practices at their workplaces, there arises a pertinent question of how employers and corporations can create environments conducive to holistic well-being, where individuals can bring their whole selves and souls to work. The research underscores the need for organizations to consider and accommodate the spiritual and wellness needs of their employees, especially as younger generations continue to enter the workforce.

In response to the evolving landscape of spirituality and the identified mental health challenges faced by younger generations, initiatives such as Skylight have emerged to provide accessible tools for spiritual wellness. Skylight, an app designed to facilitate spiritual practices and wellness exercises, has garnered significant traction, with over 6 million users engaging in its offerings. Furthermore, scientific research has validated the efficacy of Skylight, demonstrating its positive impact in reducing anxiety, stress, and enhancing sleep quality among consistent users.

Ultimately, the research and resulting insights underscore the enduring significance of spirituality in American society and the evolving nature of spiritual practices across different generations. These findings also highlight the potential for organizations to play a pivotal role in promoting holistic well-being by acknowledging and addressing the spiritual and wellness needs of their employees. Initiatives such as Skylight exemplify how technology can be leveraged to support spiritual wellness, offering a promising avenue for individuals, particularly younger generations, to cultivate a deeper connection with their spirituality and enhance their overall well-being.
