Lloyd Newell, the longtime host of “Music & the Spoken Word” by The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, shared emotional news on December 10th. He and his wife, Karmel Newell, have been called to be mission leaders starting in July 2024. They’ll find out their mission location later. Lloyd will continue with the choir until they leave.
Lloyd has been the announcer for over 34 years, and Karmel has been the Tabernacle Choir’s director of member support for 18 months. The announcement was made during a rehearsal, and President Michael O. Leavitt expressed happiness for them while acknowledging the challenge of replacing Lloyd in the iconic Sunday morning broadcast.
Mission leaders for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints oversee and train missionaries in a specific area for about three years. Lloyd Newell’s involvement with “Music & the Spoken Word” started in 1991, and now, after over three decades, he and his wife are embarking on a new chapter of service. The Newells expressed gratitude and excitement for this opportunity, emphasizing that it’s not a goodbye, but a “see you later” to their cherished choir community.
