Dear Elder

Dear Elder is an excellent service to get messages to your missionary quickly. You write a message at the site and send it. Dear Elder will then e-mail those messages to your missionary’s respective mission. The Elders in the office will print them out, put them in an envelope, and deliver them to missionary.

It’s pretty convenient. The only draw back that I noticed on my mission is that because the Elders in the mission office are the ones who stuff the envelopes, there isn’t much privacy. So, don’t plan on writing a Dear John to your missionary using Dear Elder, unless you want the entire mission to know.

  1. This is actually an incorrect description of how Dear Elder letters work. All the letters are printed, stuffed, and sealed in envelopes before they leave Dear Elder’s office. No one reads the letters. No letters are ever actually e-mailed to missionaries. In that case, why wouldn’t people just e-mail the missionaries themselves?

    1. My missionary only had so much time he could spend at the computer. I’d rather have had him spend that time typing up emails home, than sitting and reading my email to him. By sending him something in print, he could read it any time he wanted and over again if he wanted. Besides, it’s more fun to get a printed letter in the mail than an email. Sure, I could print it and mail it myself, but this was so easy, why wouldn’t I do it?
