5,000 broadcast Tabernacle Choir

For nearly a century, Music & the Spoken Word has been a source of peace, inspiration, and faith for millions across the world. Every Sunday morning since July 15, 1929, the powerful combination of music and message has uplifted hearts and strengthened spirits—uninterrupted through wars, economic crises, and global challenges.

Now, as the program reaches a remarkable milestone—its 5,000th consecutive broadcast on Sunday, July 13, 2025—you have the chance to be part of this historic moment.

Derrick Porter, executive producer, principal writer, and presenter of Music & the Spoken Word, is inviting all who have been touched by the broadcast to share their personal experiences.

“As such, we’re inviting any and all to share with us their stories and experiences, the impact that ‘Music & the Spoken Word’ has had in their life. We’d like to share some of these stories with our viewers across the world.”

These stories will help shape the theme of the special Spoken Word message for the 5,000th broadcast, and some may be highlighted during the program or on social media.

Enduring Through History

The first broadcast in 1929 was a simple setup: a single microphone attached to the ceiling, connected by a cable to KSL’s radio station a block away. Since then, the program has endured, week after week, through some of history’s most defining moments:

  • The Great Depression
  • World War II
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall
  • The assassination of John F. Kennedy (who had spoken at the Salt Lake Tabernacle just weeks before)
  • 9/11
  • The COVID-19 pandemic

“For 96 years, Music & the Spoken Word has been sharing music and messages of hope, peace, and joy with the world,” Porter said.

It remains one of the longest-running continuous broadcasts in the world, watched by millions of viewers each week in over 50 countries.

A Personal Connection

Many viewers have shared profound experiences of how Music & the Spoken Word has impacted their lives. Porter recalled one particularly touching story:

A couple who had been married for many years spent their last moments together watching the Sunday morning broadcast. The husband passed away shortly after, and the theme that day—”Everyday Courage”—became a source of strength for the grieving wife. A short while later, she attended a live broadcast at the Conference Center, finding comfort in the very program that had accompanied her through that difficult time.
