The History of the Scriptures
Throughout history, the written word of God as found through scriptures has been an important tool to connect us to God. Today, we enjoy access to scriptures like never before. Here’s a quick and inspiring look at the history of the scriptures used by Latter-day Saints!
King James Bible
After the first English Bible was translated by William Tyndale in the 1500s, scriptures became more available to the masses. In 1611, the first edition of the King James Bible was published and remains one of the most prominent translations of the Bible available. It is the official version of the Bible used by the Church. The photo above depicts the title page seen in the first edition.
First Edition Book of Mormon
After translating the gold plates, the first edition of the Book of Mormon was published by Egbert B. Grandin in Palmyra, New York. The first day it was available for sale was March 26, 1830. For the next century, multiple copies of the standard works came into existence, such as the Pearl of Great Price and Doctrine and Covenants.
President Thomas S. Monson
Elders Thomas S. Monson, Boyd K. Packer, and Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles headed an historic effort to update our scriptures. In 1979, the Church published its own version of the King James Bible and introduced the Triple Combination, complete with footnotes and references.
Reading Scriptures
The latest round of changes to our physical scriptures came in 2013. The Church released a new edition of the standard works with improved font and typeface, corrections in the study aid, formatting standardization, and small spelling and grammar changes.
Digital Scriptures
Since the first iteration of the Gospel Library app was released for electronic devices in 2012, the Church has continued to update apps and websites to provide the scriptures digitally. As part of this process, all scripture colors except for black were discontinued between 2013 and 2019.
