Personal Revelation: Russell M. Nelson, Oliver Cowdery, and You – powered by Happy Scribe

Hey, everybody, and welcome to Latter Day Divers, where we dive into the words of ancient and modern prophets. My name is Will Perez and thank you for diving with me. I’ve learned if you’re on this channel, you’re either a latter day diver or a latter day hater. But welcome to all nonetheless. So have you ever heard about the electrician who decided to become a priest? Yeah, he had a shocking revelation.

Get it. All right. Well, anyway, thanks for letting my dad joke Segway us into today’s topic. Personal revelation. I want to share with you some awesome highlights of everything President Russell M. Nelson has said about Revelation since he was called unsustained as prophet and president of the church in twenty eighteen. I’m going to link those into doctrine and covenants, section six, seven, eight, nine sections we typically associate with personal revelation and highlight two specific categories I think will help you to dive into your study of these sections and this topic.

So Oliver is serving as a scribe for Joseph, and he’s witnessing Joseph continually having this amazing translating experience, we might call this translation revelation through the gift and power of God, all of us watching Joseph translate and he becomes anxious to have this gift and experience for himself in response to his desire and even to his failed attempt to do what Joseph’s doing.

I just want to share two things that the Lord teaches him throughout the process, and I’m going to title them, look to Joseph and do the work. When it comes to receiving Revelation, Joseph was like a real time example for other Oliver Oliver Akhalgori to learn from the Lord tells Oliver multiple times. For example, be diligent. Stand by my servant Joseph faithfully. I grant unto you a gift even as my servant Joseph. Behold, I give in to you and my servant Joseph.

The keys of this gift, Oliver, was to look on to Joseph and hopefully learn something from what he was doing and experiencing. Second, we know that unfortunately, Oliver isn’t as successful as he wanted to be in this endeavor. And the Lord tells him, you haven’t understood. You suppose that I would give it under you when you took no thought save it was to ask me. Behold, you must study it out in your mind, Oliver.

You’ve got to work a little harder for this. Again, if we’re looking to Joseph as a pattern, we learn that translation receiving revelation. Opening the heavens requires work on the part of the recipient.

I would just like to to maybe to challenge you a little bit on on why we should care.

Well, these two things are exactly what I’ve noticed. President Nelson repeat time and time again as he’s instructed us on personal revelation. Look to Joseph. And do the work. That’s my way of saying now I need you to think outside the box with me, OK? What if we are symbolically Oliver Calgary and the same way that the Lord instructed Oliver about this process of revelation because he wanted to communicate with Oliver and he helped him emphasize to Joseph as a pattern and do the work we’re Oliver is today and we’re trying to learn and we want to have these experiences like Joseph and the prophets are having and the Lord through a certain president.

Nelson is again through the beauty of repetitious gospel principles and teaching, inviting us to look to Joseph and do the work. Don’t believe me. Just watch.

One of the things the Spirit has repeatedly impressed upon my mind since my new calling as president of the church is how willing the Lord is to reveal his mind and will the privilege of receiving revelation is one of the greatest gifts of God to his children through the manifestations of the Holy Ghost. The Lord will assist us in all our righteous pursuits.

If Joseph Smith’s transcended experience in this sacred grove teaches us anything, it is that the heavens are open and that God speaks to his children. Follow the example of the Prophet Joseph. Find a quiet place where you can regularly go humble yourself before God pour out your heart to your heavenly father. Turn to him for answers and for comfort. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses. Yes, that very longings of your heart.

And then listen. Right. The thoughts that come to your mind, record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will grow into the principle of revelation.

Now, I plead with each of you to do. Has the teenage Joseph did take your questions directly to your heavenly father in prayer?

Ask him in the name of Jesus Christ to guide you.

You can learn for yourself right now at your age how to receive personal revelation.

And nothing will make a bigger difference in your life than that.

In this special year, as we commemorate the 210 anniversary of the First Vision, I invite you to think deeply and often about this key question. How do you hear him? I also invite you to take steps to hear him better and more often.

One of the things that you learn from that first vision. I said, the heavens are open. And God is anxious to communicate with his children upon the Earth, provided they ask for it.

I urge you to stretch beyond your current spiritual ability to receive personal revelation, for the Lord has promised that if thou shalt seek, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou may know the mysteries and peaceable things, that which bring us the joy that rich bring us life eternal. Nothing opens the heavens quite like the combination of increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ in The Book of Mormon.

And regular time committed to temple and family history work. My beloved brothers and sisters, I plead with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation. Choose to do the spiritual work required to enjoy the gift of the Holy Ghost and hear the voice of this spirit more frequently and more clearly.

I promise you that if you will sincerely and persistently do the spiritual work needed to develop the crucial spiritual skill of learning how to hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, you will have all the directions you will ever need in your life. Pour out your heart to God. Ask him if these things are true. Make time to study his words.

Really study.

If you truly love your family and if you desire to be exalted with them throughout eternity, pay the price now through serious study and fervent prayer to know these eternal truths and then to abide by them, do the spiritual work to find out for yourselves.

And please do it now.

Time is running out as disciples of Jesus Christ, our efforts to hear him need to be ever more intentional. It takes conscious and consistent effort to fill our daily lives with his words, his teachings, his truths. Daily immersion in the word of God is crucial for spiritual survival, especially in these days of increasing upheaval. I promise that as you increase your time in temple and family history work, you will increase and improve your ability to hear him.

It has never been more imperative to know how the spirit speaks to you than right now. I renew my plea for you to do whatever it takes to increase your spiritual capacity to receive personal revelation. Doing so will help you to know how to move ahead with your life. What to do during times of crisis and how to discern and avoid the temptations and the deceptions of the adversary, it takes consistent daily effort to develop personal habits, to study the gospel, to learn more about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and to seek and respond to personal revelation.

So what do you think? Am I crazy? I don’t want to be overly prescriptive on this channel, but I would submit to you that if you study President Nelson’s words and studies Section six, eight, nine, the example of Section seven, you’ll see that we can increase our capacity to receive personal revelation if we look to Joseph as a pattern and if we do the work and it’s possible for you and for me because the Lord wants to speak to us now, I shared with you highlights of every year of President Nelson’s profit presidency.

Twenty, eighteen, twenty, nineteen, twenty twenty. But the pattern continues. President Nelson has kicked off January 20, 2021, with a personal article and invitation in this month’s Leah Hona. And again, he repeats, looked at Joseph and do the work. He first dates and reminds us to receive personal revelation, to find answers and to receive protection and direction. We remember the pattern the prophet Joseph Smith set for us. As we repeat this process, we will, in the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith, grow into the principle of revelation.

Then he describes the work required and reminds us to immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, to take initiative in prayer, to stay on your knees for a while and listen. And to record impressions and act, he then says in this new year, I encourage you to take the necessary steps to hear the Lord better and more often so that you can receive the enlightenment he wants to give you. It’s an awesome article. You should check it out. Thank you so much for diving with me today.

This was a fun video to make and just to reflect on all of our Akhalgori and put myself in his shoes and consider how the Lord is trying to teach me, just like he tried to teach him how to receive revelation and communicate with him. And I’m grateful for that. I encourage you to look to Joseph as a pattern and others in our lives and to do the work. I know that in the Lord’s timetable we will hear answers and hear him and increase that capacity to receive the Holy Ghost in our mind and in our heart.

Thanks again for being with me today.
