Pioneer Day: An observation about immigrants – Latter-day Life Hacker

On this day, 22 July 1847, the first group of Mormon refugees illegally arrived in what is now Salt Lake City, then a part of the province of Alta California, Mexico. These immigrants, fleeing the United States for Mexico, did not plan to first stop by the nearest immigration officials’ office (in what is now Texas). These illegal immigrants turned the desert into many settlements that would become thriving communities in modern Utah, Nevada, and California. Modern Latter-day Saints revere these pioneer forebears for their courage and hard work in the face of very difficult circumstances (fleeing their established homes for the unknown). May we also recognize modern immigrants and refugees for their determination and courage, yes even those who “illegally” cross an imaginary line, in search of a better life for their families. #pioneerday #loveoneanother #goddoesntcareaboutborders
