“The New Publications of the Standard Works—1979, 1981”

Forty years ago, in August 1981, a new edition of the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price was published. Read about this substantial change of format, which coordinated with the 1979 Latter-day Saint edition of the Holy Bible, in an article by Robert J. Matthews: “The New Publications of the Standard Works—1979 to 1981.”
On September 22, 1827, Moroni entrusted Joseph Smith with the plates along with the warning that Joseph would be responsible for them: “That if I should let them go carelessly or through any neglect of mine I should be cut off, but that if I would use all my endeavours to preserve them untill he should call for them, they should be protected.” Read Joseph Smith’s record here.
Joseph Smith dedicated the Kirtland Temple on March 27, 1836 (section 109), with another dedicatory session on March 31. At these dedications and on April 3, heavenly beings appeared at the temple, blessing the Saints and delivering keys of the priesthood.
