One can know the truthfulness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by applying its teachings, said Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

“The proof lies really in living the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said. Elder Uchtdorf shares his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ in this Church News video, titled “Work of God.”

Elder Uchtdorf first came to know this truth as a young boy looking at stained glass windows of Jesus Christ and the First Vision.

“As an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, I do know that He’s not just on this stained window,” he said. “He is real. … I know that He lives and that He is there for me.”

To know that the Church is true has also something to do with what I feel in my heart. When I was sitting there as a child and helping our organ player to pump air in his organ so he could play, I looked up to a window, a stained-glass window, and saw Jesus Christ, but also another window with a first vision. And just as a young boy hearing the music, serving, so to speak, at the moment, and then having the impression there of seeing Jesus Christ, what he means to us, and what he has meant 2,000 years before to the people, I had this firm feeling in my heart. Yes, this is true. And this is what I want to believe and follow in my life. The proof lies really in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And I felt that, yes, it may not always be easy, and you may find opposition just within yourself to overcome your own temptations there, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true. I learned this early on by applying what is being taught. As an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, I do know that he’s not just on this stained window, he’s real.

And it happened that they really appeared to Joseph. I know that. And I know that he lives and that he is there for me. He’s my strength. And Father in heaven hears me and answers my prayers. And I know that the answers are sometimes not as I wish to have them, but they are right because they help me to progress. So I know this work is true, and I’m grateful for it. It fills my life with joy, and I’m grateful for those around me, my family, my friends, the Church as a whole to be a part of my belonging and knowing that this is indeed the work of God. Of this, I testify as an apostle of Jesus Christ and in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
