The renovation of the Salt Lake Temple is a monumental project that preserves its rich history while preparing it for future generations. As visitors step into the newly renovated temple, they will find a space that honors the pioneer heritage and enhances the worship experience for more people. The Church’s Prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, emphasized that all upgrades “will emphasize and highlight the life, ministry and mission of Jesus Christ in His desire to bless every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.”

While the temple has undergone several renovations since its dedication in 1893, this current project is the most extensive. The primary goal was to strengthen the building against earthquakes while maintaining its historical integrity. As Bill Williams, the Church’s director of architecture, explained, “The renovated temple will feel more consistent and more like the original Salt Lake Temple from beginning to end… I think for most people it will feel like, ‘Wow. Now it feels like the Salt Lake Temple from stem to stern.’” Efforts were made to restore elements such as the celestial room, original sealing rooms, and the large assembly room on the fifth floor. Additionally, historic designs have been carefully incorporated into carpets, draperies, and other decorative elements.

However, some original features, such as the murals in the endowment rooms, could not be preserved due to structural upgrades. These murals were hand-painted on plaster and needed to be removed to reinforce the walls. Preservationists documented and photographed these artifacts, and portions will be kept in the Church History Library.

The renovation also focuses on improving capacity and accessibility. New elevators, ramps, and modern audio-visual systems will accommodate patrons with disabilities and ensure that services are available in over 90 languages. The temple will now have two baptistries, 22 sealing rooms, and five instruction rooms with increased seating. “We want to create a positive, seamless experience for everyone who visits the temple,” said Andy Kirby, director of the Church’s historic temple renovations.

With these upgrades, the Salt Lake Temple remains a sacred space for worship, welcoming people from all nations as Isaiah prophesied.
