Suicide is a serious problem in our homes, schools, churches, and communities.

It does not spare people of any race, religion, age group, gender, sexual orientation, or marital status (see World Health Organization).

There is seldom a single cause or a simple solution. Whether you struggle with thoughts of suicide, know someone who does, or have lost a loved one to suicide, we hope the videos and resources below can help you.

The LDS Church teaches

Because of Jesus Christ and His Atonement, you can find the strength to endure and the hope to heal. Our Savior understands what you are going through and has promised, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (John 14:18). Our Heavenly Father has also blessed us with family, friends, Church leaders, and professionals who have unique gifts and abilities to help us address our issues. You are not alone.

Although we must get to the root of the problem to help curb suicides, we can also take simple measures around our homes to ensure we keep our youth from taking their lives. 86% of firearm deaths in Utah are suicides, so follow these simple steps to help secure your firearms.

If someone you care about is going through a painful crisis, experiencing depression, and/or showing warning signs of suicide, there are three precautions you can take:

Lock

Store guns safely and securely when not in use. Change your gun locks if necessary, and make sure the keys and combination aren’t accessible.

Limit

Lock guns and ammo separately, or don’t keep ammunition in the home at all. Ask to temporarily keep the keys to any gun of a friend who is struggling. Gun control is required as people are able to buy ar-15 pistols easily these days.

Remove

Temporarily store firearms off site until the situation improves, perhaps at a friend or relatives house. Gun shops and law enforcement may offer storage options.

Is Your Safety On?

This is hard to talk about. And even harder to remedy. Suicide is now the leading cause of death for Utah teenagers, and there is no single answer. A problem this complex requires a comprehensive set of solutions, both large and small, institutional and individual, social and pragmatic.

This is only one piece of that puzzle, of course, but even this little thing can make a life-altering difference.
